Lundy Mysteries #3

October 3, 2020, 7:03 pm

More background

Both the grandparents of Roxter lived in Penticton

Jack and Jessie Lundy (more research On J.A. Lundy – John Abert or John Albert) ?
and
Otto and Martha Gaube

evidence of that in the Penticton Cemetery.

The picture shown earlier ….of a white man and a native person is of Otto Gaube, one grand father of Rocky’s.

The story behind the picture and who has that gun belt is a part of the story that someone else must tell.

We have now determined that Otto Gaube was born in 1860 and might be 25 in this shot as part of the ‘Riel Rebellion’. Difficult at this late date to determine al the facts. He died in 1923.

***

Dr. John Lawrence (Laurence?) Lundy went to war – so did his brother George.

Lawrence a Captain in the Canadian Dental Corp. Lundy spent some time in Princeton before locating to Oliver. He was married in 1938. Died April 7, 1953.

His wife was Martha Alma Rosa Gaube of Penticton.

OIB members to vote on land matters

October 3, 2020, 8:56 am

After a few years of pushing Department of Indigenous Services Canada (DISC) to set up a land lease referendum, a date has been set for the band informational meeting and vote date:

Land Lease Information Meeting:

Tuesday, October 6 th at 5:00PM, Community Hall

Land Lease Vote Day:

Thursday, October 29 th –  9:00AM to 8:00PM, Community Hall

Because of Covid-19, Department of Indigenous Services Canada (DISC) has sent all Osoyoos Indian Band members living on reserve mail-in voting ballots (normally this would not be done – only off reserve band members would get voting packages in the mail).

Band members living on + off reserve can still vote in person at the hall on October 29th from 9:00AM to 8:00 PM, (but please remember to bring in your mail-in package that was mailed to you, if you lose your mail in ballot you can still vote in person at the hall). COVID-19 precautions will be in place (social distancing). For those on reserve Band members who wish to vote ahead of October 29th please fill out your mail-in ballots as per instructions and hand in the sealed envelope to Doris at the Band Office.

Sorry the information meeting and other meetings and details of the upcoming vote was not done before Department of Indigenous Services Canada (DISC) mailed the ballots out. We did not know when DISC was mailing out the ballots and this is the first vote being done during COVID-19 and Indian Affairs is doing a few things differently.

Please read the reasons why Chief and Council feel this land lease referendum will provide much more needed income to Osoyoos Indian Band to provide more money for all the Band’s program and services (health, education, youth + elders, culture, etc.) plus support our businesses and increased per capita (an additional 15% for per capita-per additional lease).

Chief Clarence Louie

Lundy Mysteries #2

October 3, 2020, 7:53 am

Lundy Mysteries #3 coming up soon

Some may have been blind-sided by #1 so I shall introduce the subject. Roxter Lundy is a well known guy in Oliver – a husband, a father, and grandfather – more on that a bit later.

It was pointed out to me to look into the “bright” past of Roxter and his relatives.

Rocky as he is known was born in 44, his sister Sharon born in 41 – to a nice couple Martha and John ‘Lawrence’ Lundy of Oliver.

Simple story you say – well Lawrence Lundy was Oliver’s first dentist but he died early leaving a wife and two young children to fend for themselves. But as history shows there were many relatives still alive and living in the area.

Martha Lundy ( the mother ) had to get various jobs including a number at the Oliver Chronicle. Likely with Mr. Berryman – who owned the paper prior to Don Somerville.

Now the dentist Lawrence had a brother – and he George – married Evelyn who become an English teacher in the 50 and 60’s at SOHS – Oliver’s high school.

So that info should solve some parts of the Lundy Mysteries – but more to come…………
