Despite the heat most homes and properties in town doing well at keeping up the homestead….except…. ( this located on Rockcliffe Rd )
We will be featuring the worst in the week ahead – no more than five properties that need serious help.
Folks – it takes less than an hour to keep things looking reasonable.

Very good point Kelly !!! Thats my old hood that is in question!!

This article and infact this entire website is so typical of why Oliver is known as such a pathetic, lame and dry place to either live or visit.
Okay, everyone is entitled to their opinion. So, tell us “south okanagan” do you live or visit Oliver? If so, why? Move on and quit griping.
My opinion: A bit too gossipy for my taste, Jack.

Have the owners commented on this picture of a tree and a stop sign?
To quote Shakespeare: “Much adoe about Nothing” – oh shucks that was about infidelity was it not. wg
It takes less than an hour?? To whom? You? I have hours and hours of trimming, weeding and trying to figure out my property and cannot afford zeroscaping. This looks like a lot of work frankly. The reason, by the way, so many trees were probably knocked over recently is because of the water metering and the planting years ago of trees that are not native to this dry area. When bills climb and you are tight on money, and you cannot afford to have your property maintained by pros, this may be the “shooting in the foot” we have come to. I would be furious if you posted a picture of my lame cedars that have died because of me trying to not use as much water.
I Like it!
all cool, peaceful and shady n all……
Interesting comments on an unsightly commentary. I wholeheartedly agree with the comments from “There is a better way”. The Town of Oliver has a bylaw in place and it is the responsibility of the Town of Oliver to enforce it. Presumably, most unsightly properties aren’t dealt with unless complaints are received. Presumably, if a bylaw officer has been given the go-ahead to approach a specific property owner and nothing is done, it would be an internal issue to be followed up on. A public forum has its place but I’m not in agreement that this is one of them.
Hey Jack! I don’t have an opinion on that matter…does it mean I am “buttless”????
Let the bylaw take effect between the Town and the individual in question. Making a public display of someone’s property is not the solution. Being familiar with this property I spent some time this PM pulling weeds at this property. Instead of a public display, let’s help our fellow neighbours and friends when we know they may not be able to do this on their own. Life is short. Make a difference.
Just to note that we take drives in evenings around on regular basis, and if the general public has noticed, ever since town put water meters in and forced everyone on them, then raised the prices of water after saying it would stay reasonable rate for first 2 years, properties have become unsightly to some people. Out here we all looked after the boulevards, planted, cut, trimmed and watered to keep weeds out and make it looked well kept, now everyone has let that go,because of price of water, lawns are looking brown and many trees are in need of water around rural and town areas. Yes some people are in need of help and a neighbor could offer help, or maybe they are disabled, and need regular garden maintenance person, but generally I believe alot has to do with the water situation.
Dustin: I like the way you express yourself, you have a good heart. Jack: Your opinion of ‘unsightly’ may not match the concerns of others. Unless a residence is under ‘notification’ regarding unsightly conditions … it’s not news. I also know you do not do your own yard work ~ how immaculate would your residence be if you had to maintain it yourself? To paraphrase my late Grandpa Art, “Opinions are like …. ah…. butts – everyone has one.” I’m off to work in my yard.

Speaking of unsightly, what about that unfinished project/hotel on McKinney Road?
Well.. Lets start calling this web site Jack’s Daily News… If you continue to post pic’s of house that you deem as unsightly in and around Oliver area, Jack I will loose much respect for you! How do you know that these people are not disabled? or elderly? Or don’t have time to make there yard look up to your standards because they have a family and are working 2 jobs to make it by. Yes there is a bylaw in place, but is it up to you to promote these properties as you see fit ( what you call unsightly ). Why go the extra step to bring the heat ( so to speak ) down on these people?.. Are you the Town of Oliver bylaw officer? Go take some pic’s of crown land and post them! Go take some pic’s of the hike and bike path! The first step to becoming a good, valued, and trusted news deliverer is to LEAVE YOUR OWN OPINIONS OUT OF IT!.. Or U should change the name of oliverdailynews.com to Jacksownopinion.com ……Well my opinion is that we have just placed your toes over the line.. are you going to back up or take a leap?
Publisher: To quote J-9 “Opinions are like …. ah…. butts – everyone has one”. But in this case you used your name and I respect that Dustin.
Couple of points to think about:
1. No house was shown – it’s part of the streetscape at the corner. If you know the owner and he\she needs help – let me know.
2. Unsightly is my word and my opinion. No action by a bylaw officer is taken until a complaint is received in the Town office and investigated. My thoughts on what is unsightly has the same value as your opinion.
3. Oliver Daily News contains newsy items on activities, events, departures, arrivals, painted houses, lots for sale, large trees blowing in the wind – we even like opinions and many that I don’t agree with.
4. Oliver Daily News is owned and operated by Jack Bennest and he will continue to express his opinions in pictures and words as well as the opinions of others in the form of letters to the editor and comments. No need for a name change
5. If you don’t like the content and subject material on any tv, radio, newspaper or blog – express yourself by your action.
As a child, I was taught that everyone can use a hand sometimes. “You kids get out there and help!” Whether it was carrying groceries into the house, mowing a lawn or helping with housework or children, my father expected us to step up and offer assistance.
Rather than criticizing our neighbours and causing resentment, an offer of help would be much more pro-active. The net result might be a tidy yard in the neighbourhood and lots of goodwill.
Seems kind of unfair or snobish to point out these properties with out knowing the surcomestances of why they are in the shape their in. Just a thought.
Publisher: Without your name WG no one can take you seriously. Don’t shoot the messenger.
There is an unsightly premises bylaw and here’s hoping there will be some enforcement. Using the excuse that some other property is worse doesn’t fit with my logic or snobishness.
Does’t look much diffrent than the Bike & Hike Trail……
Speaking of unsitely, have you noticed the disgraceful display of Canadian flags flying around Oliver. Some are just threads, some are half flags and tattered remains. Ihave also noticed taht contrary to protocol a new business has other countrys flags flying higher than the Canadian flags. Might make an interesting photo tour.
There is another property along Tuc El Nuit Rd. where trees are so dry and dead that they are falling along the wires along the road, and there are people living in campers in the middle of the field. I guess they don’t have to keep their properties looking nice because it’s “rural Oliver”.
