On Sept. 10/17 Patrick Hampson said re: clean-up issues in Oliver, that they are dealt with on “a complaint driven basis”. He’s so right there. He just didn’t say how many years people have to complain before something’s done. People have been complaining about this building & property (480 Bank Avenue) for well over two years – & it’s still a mess. If Oliver wants to beautify the down town area in order to attract new businesses & tourists – it sure isn’t helping their cause when, about 1/2 a block west of Hwy 97, we have what closely resembles a refugee camp. Who is in charge in this town?
The town council & the tax payers – or the absentee landowners?

Oliver has changed since we moved here 17 years ago and not for the ‘better’.
The Town informed me that clean-up issues, and many others, are dealt with on “a complaint driven basis”. This can best be viewed as a method to save money and does nothing to improve the appearance of our community.
In the case of the pictured mess; clean it up and put the cost on the Owners taxes. if the Owner challenges the cost in Court and the Town loses; suck it up and spend the money to set an example.
Complaint driven? Consider this as a complaint in general about the deterioration of of what could be an even more attractive area.
Who wants to stop and visit a Town which allows commercial properties adjacent to Main Street to look like a s..t house for weeks on end!
Publisher: I could not agree more – many people ask for action…. but ( I will take my share of the blame ).

Perhaps the Town does not want to be seen as being too ” heavy handed” in dealing with such situations. Somewhat of a “live and let live’ thing, until complaints are received.
None the less, I would say that there are more then a few properties in both the Town and the R.D.O.S. that should be cleaned up to a presentable level. But, again, who am I to determine what is a presentable level? Easy for any of us to say , but each of us with a different standard.
