Business attracts business ! It would be nice to have fulfilled, each one of our wishes for business downtown, but the only sure way I know to do that, is to do it yourself. Be thankful, as others have said, that someone in these economic times is willing to give it a GO! In fact it may just be the financial climate in which this business could well thrive.
Also, it is not only Council’s responsibility to attract business to Oliver but I would suggest each one of ours through our attitudes and efforts to improve the ambiance and appearance of Oliver, in that others, may come and enjoy the area as we do!
What has, each one of us done, to this end lately ?

The council is looking at some economic incentives for businesses…if you go to the Town of Oliver website, and go to Council, Councils Strategic Summary you can see what we have in our future plans….we have in the last budget drop commercial taxes…another good incentive…moving forward
Maybe the landlords could offer a rent reduction?
Significant tax breaks for business require re-designation of a zone as a business improvement area and based on lack of business response when that suggestion was made a couple of years ago I suspect many business owners would prefer to see the property tax scale tipped so residential property owners carry more of the load.
Now lets see how that one flies!
I agree with VOH ITO…lets welcome anyone to Main Street or Oliver for that matter who has the guts to open a business…I find that one of the problems we as citizens have and that is we tend to complain alot…lets put our money where our mouths are and support these local business and more will come…it is a proven fact…welcome to Main Street
The best of luck to the owners of the relocated business. Sometimes I just have to shake my head. We complain about empty stores and then we complain about the businesses who are brave enough to move into them. It’s not the responsibility of Town Council to fill the stores with business “desirable” or otherwise. These are tough economic times and we need to be a lot more thoughtful about our comments.
I was in Dean and Lisa’s shop briefly a couple of weeks ago in it’s previous location in the old Sears building. The shop was clean, well organized and carried some pretty decent quality merchandise including a good selection of furniture. I think this business will be an asset to the Main Street as is the Jewelry/Pawn Shop down the street.

We badly need businesses to fill the gaps in Main St. but pawn shops are not really the type of businesses that make us look like a thriving town, a town where people would want to relocate.
Empty storefronts, empty lots and pawnshops make us look like a hole in the wall and all the flower pots and banners do nothing to improve this image.
Recently we received a letter from the town asking how we feel about the proposed extension of the town’s southern border. Why doesn’t council concentrate on filling the stores with desirable businesses and getting more industries into the Industrial Estate?
Could there not be more advantages and tax breaks given to prospective businesses and forget about expanding the town, which would probably result in more box stores and an even more derelict town centre. Pat Whalley
