You might question the term ‘quilting’, as you explore the show by the Fabricators. This group of 14 artists mainly from the South Okanagan has taken that fabric medium to new territory, a long way from its traditional beginnings.
On the walls you’ll discover a murder of crows, a flamboyance of flamingos, a crowded skyline, a group of reflections, a collection of thoughts and many other collectives portrayed in diverse techniques and styles.
The fibres of choice are often not cotton, but synthetic sheers and even plastics, anything that can be stitched through. Embellishment choices come from the beach, the garden, the hardware store and anywhere in between. Techniques can include painting, gluing, wiring, burning and felting.
And not everything quilted goes on a bed or a wall these days. The Fabricators have branched out into the 3rd dimension with their gathering places for creatures both real and imaginary.
You may find yourself thinking of a gathering place that has meaning for you. As you can see, the sky is not the limit.
‘Gatherings’ is on until September 30th at the Peachland Art Gallery 5684 Beach Ave. Hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 9 am – 4 pm and Sunday 10 am – 4 pm.
