Think about it with Joseph Seiler

November 15, 2019, 9:26 am

Leg

To receive a ‘leg up’ is to receive a bit of help. One can also earn a leg up or take one. I think the expression came from when one person stands, knee bent, allowing me to step there in order to climb up. That leg up can give me close to two feet toward the top of a wall or reaching something on a high shelf. A leg up is not meant to be a cheating thing but rather a helping thing, the kind you give to friends

The condition of one’s legs can be an indicator of overall health. Lean, well muscled says something. Some ailments are evident when looking at or touching a leg. A bloated leg is a reason to visit the Doctor. Inflammation, heat and throbbing in the leg, again, go to the Doctor. It seems that it is the leg that tells us about certain health items. We need our legs to get around most easily. Take care of them

The leg of a journey is one part of it, say a part between two cities or a part that is done in a canoe. This kind of leg is a building element. Each leg is a vital piece. A leg can even be a piece of information or logic element needed to completely solve a problem. Some legs of a journey might be labelled a dog’s leg, because looking at it on a map the route is shaped like the bend of a dog’s hind leg

To describe someone as leggy is to say they have long and somewhat slender legs. Some children, as they grow through their teens, might appear to be all legs. Legs in a wine glass refers to the patterns that show when we tip the glass and the wine slowly rolls down the inside again. To say wine has great legs is to say the roll back down is slow, apparently an indicator of alcohol level

In a discussion, debate, argument one speaker may be told that they don’t have a leg to stand on, yet they seem to be standing just fine, on two legs at that. What is meant is that their position on the topic does not have foundation, not credible/believable. Wow, legs seem to be pretty important things, even in a conversation. What one does with their legs, whether physical or other, is an important choice to make

Soon – no more plastic bags at BC liquor outlets..

November 15, 2019, 8:01 am

Your bottle of Sauvignon and cans of craft beer will now be bagged in paper bags instead of plastic at all B.C. Liquor Stores.

The B.C. government has selected Richmond-based bag manufacturer Bulldog Bag to provide paper bags to all 197 locations owned and operated by the province.

Vancouver Island stores will first make the switch on Nov. 25, followed by Metro Vancouver on Feb. 3, 2020. The rest of the province will convert by March 9, 2020.

The province says the switch is meant to curb growing plastic pollution, fuelled by single-use plastics. The B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch distributes about 22 million plastic bags per year to B.C. Liquor Stores throughout the province.

“Too often, single-use plastics end up polluting our oceans, waterways, parks and forests,” B.C. Attorney General David Eby said in a statement.

“At a minimum, the action taken today will mean that there will be 22 million fewer plastic bags in the landfill.”

The Steele report

November 15, 2019, 7:36 am

As I look out my bedroom window this morning, the sky is clear before sunrise.  The ground is laden with frost, delivering the message winter is coming.

For some reason the look of the morning has me thinking of the cold days of my childhood.  How I miss that old thick stew my mother made, or those hearty home made soups that tasted so  good when you came in at the end of the day from skating or sleigh riding.

I remember the hot cereal steaming in the bowl and rising to the old farmhouse ceiling.  Those were the days vegetables came from the garden in season.  The fruit and pickles were canned and stored in the pantry.  I remember some were set aside.  The baby dills and certain jars of fruit were reserved for Christmas.

For those not old enough to remember all this fuss about the canning of preserves was more than a labor of love.  For many it determined the state of the winter food supply.   One of my favorite memories is the scent of fresh baked cookies when I got home from school.  I can hear my mother in the background saying  “Don’t spoil your supper and save some for your sisters.”

It’s mornings like this that take your mind back to a simpler time that never existed.  Those times were hard times for most but they were what shaped us into who we eventually became.  We are the last of the generations that could survive anything and adapt to any situation life thrusts upon us.  I say that because we were the generation that bridged the gap between the wood stove and the gas or electric stove.

We in some cases didn’t have refrigerators, we had a cold room and sometimes things were tucked away in the porch.  I remember the old tub on the kitchen floor for the Saturday night bath too.  We didn’t consider it a hard life it is the way it was.

This morning I recall an episode of piling the last of the wood on a frosty morning like this.  I wasn’t overjoyed piling wood.  My father said something I never forgot.

“Always do the chores you least like first and get them out of the way, and learn to do any chore you are given, your best effort.  Those who can do many things well are the ones who survive tough times,”

Come to think of it I would give all I have to bite into one of moms fresh baked cookies, or for that matter I would love to pile wood with my dad.

To open summer of 2020

November 15, 2019, 7:32 am

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) board of directors has endorsed a 20-year lease agreement with the Osoyoos Museum Society. The board endorsement covers the operation of the Osoyoos Museum at 8702 Main Street in Osoyoos.

The Osoyoos Museum was previously located at 19 Park Place. The Osoyoos Museum Society determined the facility was no longer suitable and began exploring options for a new location. The RDOS-owned building at 8702 Main Street was identified as an ideal location for the new museum facility.

The RDOS, on behalf of Electoral Area “A” and in partnership with the Osoyoos Museum Society and Town of Osoyoos, worked on the agreement to permit the operation of a museum at the new site.
The existing lease with current tenant Home Hardware Stores Ltd., expires December 31st, 2019. The Osoyoos Museum Society lease takes effect January 1st, 2020. The Osoyoos Museum Society will begin upgrades and renovations in January 2020, to accommodate the museum. The new facility is projected to open in the summer of 2020.

The museum lease was formalized and signed recently by RDOS chair Karla Kozakevich, Area “A” director Mark Pendergraft, Town of Osoyoos Mayor Sue McKortoff and along with representatives from the Osoyoos Museum Society. Boundary-Similkameen MLA Linda Larson was also in attendance.

The new museum location will provide Osoyoos with an important historical and cultural amenity that will help educate residents and visitors about the South Okanagan’s heritage.
