Oldest and the finest – side by side today at Okanagan Falls Fire and Rescue.
Chief Bob Haddow said turnout was excellent with about a hundred people in 4 hours.
One of the chief reasons for such a show of all the equipment, history and the hall is recruits.
Haddow says he expects three new recruits as a result of the open house.
OK Falls is a busy department as it acts as a first responder unlike many fire departments in jurisdictions with ambulance service.
Update: ” Congratulations to Margaret Maximenko for a well-fought campaign. I appreciate all the support I received from across the riding”
Dick Cannings gets the nod
Members of the federal NDP Riding Association for South Okanagan – West Kootenay (SO-WK) came together in Grand Forks this weekend and, along with hundreds of others who voted by mail-in or online balloting, chose Richard (Dick) Cannings as their candidate in the 2015 election.
Born and raised in Penticton.
“A brilliant mind, Dick’s commitment to his community and the environment are indisputable,” said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. “Alex is leaving some big shoes to fill but there’s no question the people in this riding will be extremely well served by Dick Cannings.”
SO-WK is a new riding the bulk of which falls within the riding currently represented NDP MP Alex Atamanenko. Known for his hard work, honesty, and integrity, Atamanenko, who chose to not run for a fourth term. offered his congratulations to Cannings and committed to working with him in the lead up to the election.
Margaret Maximenko, who was also seeking the nomination, moved to make the vote unanimous and joined Cannings in praising the way both campaigns were run throughout the nomination,
“I’m humbled to be nominated and excited to be part of the Tom Mulcair’s team, offering Canadians a real alternative to the Harper Conservatives in the 2015 election,” said Cannings. “I look forward to taking the campaign throughout the riding over the months to come.”
The Okanagan Portuguese Club is proud to announce the unveiling of the new name for the Club Hall.

As we approach Remembrance Day, we think about our Fallen Heroes. However, we sometimes forget that we still have thousands of unsung heroes who go unnoticed.
These are the men and women who protect our country, and other countries around the world, on a daily basis. Many of these are wounded heroes, injured while in service, not just in our armed forces, but also whilst fighting fires and crime.
Let us not forget those men and women of the Police Force and the Fire and Ambulance Service who are injured, and in need of care and convalescence whilst receiving hospital treatment.
One place for these men and women to recover is Honour House, a fully modernised, Heritage Home, located in New Westminster. Here the patients can relax and recover in a quiet, healing atmosphere. Their families can also be accommodated, if they live far from the area.
Volunteers and donations are always required to assist in providing the care and comforts, needed on a daily basis, by those convalescing at the facility.
The Order of the Eastern Star will be holding a hot dog sale, outside of Buy Low on Friday, 24th October from 10.30 – 2.00pm, all proceeds of which will be sent to the Honour House Society. Please come and support this very worthy cause and enjoy a hot dog with fried onions. Cost is by donation.
